To learn more, read a detailed account of the 2016 trip, filled with fantastic photos and elaborate impressions, on Ashley's blog. You can also watch our videos and media coverage on YouTube.

ReConnect Hungary, however, is not just a two-week trip. It is a lifetime journey to rediscovering and reconnecting to a community that is vibrant and spans continents. Read on to see how our alumni stay connected and involved.

In 2016, we raised the age limit to 28 to include more young adults beyond their college years. In 2017, we are adding further requirements to the application process: a video essay and two written opinion pieces about a culturally relevant topic.

Successful completion of our “Essentials of Hungary: A Primer and Introduction” online course is now a prerequisite of admission into the Program.

Finally, in the application form applicants are asked to select the tasks they commit to fulfilling as part of their alumni obligations, which includes indicating the Hungarian organization (local or national) they will volunteer with upon their return from Hungary.

In 2016, the Program expanded to offer an at-cost seven-day add-on excursion to Transylvania, and the 25 participants who joined the ReConnect Transylvania trip enjoyed an enlightening, entertaining and engaging program with local students as travel escorts and meetings with top leaders in various professional fields who revealed what sustains and drives this largest, most vibrant Hungarian minority community. Based on the success of this program element, we are offering this option again in 2017.

Our alumni take an active part in their local Hungarian communities upon their return from Hungary. One way they give back to their community is by participating in Hungarian festivals, where they promote the Program by sharing their experiences in person. You can always find them at annual Hungarian festivals throughout the country, such as the Scout Day in Parma and the Fall Picnic in Hiram, OH, as well as the Hungarian Festival in New Brunswick and the Palinka Festival in Garfield, NJ, just to mention a few.

This year, they also participated in many events commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, including the U.S. Tour of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble, Spirit of Hungary.

In August, a terrible flood devastated the Arpadhon Hungarian Settlement in Louisiana, the oldest Hungarian community in the U.S. In September, our alumna Meghan Ince ('15) launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the Arpadhon community, and with contributions from many of our alumni, as well as other concerned Hungarians, the campaign has already raised over $1,200! Please support their efforts to raise a total of $31,000. And thank you to all who donated!

This one-of-a-kind Program needs your support to continue our service to future generations of Hungarian Americans. We are a non-profit public-private partnership, and every year we need to raise one third of all costs from individuals, organizations and corporate sponsors. Please consider making a secure online donation now!
