Betty Belanger

Betty M. Belanger, age 75 of Elk River passed away peacefully in anticipation of being reunited with her parents and the Lord on September 23, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Preceded in death by her parents, Alex & Mary; brothers, Imre;, Alex & Joe Bodnar & sister-in-law, Lorraine Bodnar; and previous husband, Edwin.

Survived by her children, Mary (Matt) Thompson, Theresa (Bret) Hoaglund, Michael (Donna) and Matthew; 11 grandchildren, Tyler (Christine), Bucko (Haley), Tony (Kristin), Jeremy, Trent (Kaylee) and Jayson Thompson; Mitch and Luke Hoaglund; Jenna (Kalen) Thomas; and Kara and Jared Belanger; 2 great-grandchildren, Evan and Ayla; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

After many years as a nurse, working in many places, Betty retired from the Cambridge Hospital. She was an avid gardener and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty held a deep passion for her Hungarian heritage which included helping organize the Rotz family reunion with over 600 attending. She was involved with many historical organizations both locally and statewide.

Betty a second generation Hungarian-American was not only a notable member of the Elk River community, but also a former Board Member of the Minnesota Hungarians organization. She has worked for many years researching public records on birth, marriage and decease of Hungarian immigrants; interviewing descendents of Hungarian settlers, collecting photographs, weaving together stories of immigrants with Elk River’s past.
 Betty, spoke Hungarian fluently and she was a talented artist making beautiful and authentic Hungarian embroideries. Over the years she participated as an embroidery & artifacts demonstrator numerous times at the Festival of Nations event in St. Paul, MN. 

Memorial Service 11 a.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013, at the Catholic Church of St. Andrew, 566 4th St., Elk River with visitation from 9-11 a.m. at the church. Private Interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Guardian Angels-Elim Hospice. Dares Funeral Home, 763-441-1212.
